Why Does America Have Such a High Conviction Rate

Several years ago my wife needed to go to the local check cashing store and I decided to go along for the ride because my wife and I have not been able to spend a lot of time together. Turned out that the check was one of these Nigerian scams and they arrested both my wife and I and for the next 3 years Broward sheriffs office decided to prosecute us for criminal intent. Over the next 3 years every time we had to go to court we had to take off from our jobs, pay for parking and spend the entire day at the courthouse.

If we had been able to fight this until the end we would have won but our jobs were telling us to end this or they would have to let us go and money was very tight throughout this ordeal. Paying high dollar amounts for legal counsel, missing work, etc... Finally we for force to make a plea agreement in order to end this. My wife for misdemeanor trespassing and me for misdemeanor petty theft.

It costs a great deal of time and money if you want to take a stand to prove your innocence. This is how the justice system gets so many damn convictions because people are force to accept these plea agreements to end everything.. One of the worse parts concerning this is if you ever apply for a new job and they ask you if you were convicted of a felony or misdemeanor then you have to tell them the truth.

The majority of people who are forced to accept some sort of a plea are not guilty of anything accept the issue that they don't have the time for a lengthy trial, the money for good legal counsel, and the interruption of their lives. A truck rear ended me last year and I was given a traffic ticket for improper yield or something like that. I just plead no contest because I didn't have the time to take off from work. This year when looking for replacement auto insurance the quotes were $1000 higher because of this traffic ticket on my record.

I have not spent a lot of time looking at other countries and their justice system but for some reason I doubt very seriously whether any of them are as corrupt as the United States. I have seen reports where of all the inmates doing hard time here that a large percentage of them were wrongfully accused. Two kids spent over 30 years of their lives in prison for rape and then because of DNA research it turns out they didn't commit the rape and the only compensation they were offered was some piddly amount.
